This sentence counter tells you how many sentences are in a piece of text, and — more usefully — how long each one is. Paste an essay, an email, a blog draft or an assignment and you get the sentence count, word count, character count with and without spaces, paragraph count, average words per sentence and the length of your longest and shortest sentence.

Sentences are detected by terminal punctuation: a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark ends a sentence. Common abbreviations and decimals can occasionally be miscounted by any tool that works this way, so treat the number as accurate rather than forensic. The per-sentence list below the counter shows exactly how the text was split, so you can see any edge case at a glance.

Why average sentence length matters: readable prose sits around 15–20 words per sentence. Push past 25 and comprehension drops sharply; sit under 10 for a whole page and the text reads choppy. Teachers, editors and readability scores like Flesch–Kincaid all lean on this number. Everything runs in your browser — nothing you paste is uploaded or stored.
