Fees are charged on both sides of a trade, and they are the reason so many "small win" trades are actually losses. A 0.2% maker/taker fee applied to a buy and a sell means you need roughly a 0.4% price move before you are level. High-frequency trading at 1% round-trip fees requires a 1% move on every trade just to stand still.
