Most freelancers price by copying whatever the last person quoted. This freelance rate calculator works from the other end: start with the income you actually want to keep, add business expenses and tax, then divide by the hours you can realistically bill.

The billable-hours percentage is the input people forget. Nobody bills 40 hours a week — admin, sales calls, proposals, invoicing and marketing eat 30–40% of your time. Setting billable utilisation to 60–70% and vacation to 6 weeks a year usually produces an hourly rate 50–80% higher than a naive salary ÷ 2,080 calculation, and that gap is exactly why underpricing is so common.

The output gives an hourly rate, an 8-hour day rate, a weekly figure and the monthly gross revenue you need. Treat it as a floor, not a ceiling: value-based pricing on outcomes can go well above it. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
